What kind of tenor saxophone should I get?
I’m in my high school jazz 1 band and right now, I’m playing on a yamaha YTS-23 with a Morgan Excalibur mouthpiece. I’m kind of on a low budget and I’m looking for a good saxophone that will help me for jazz… Any suggestions?
Just to be clear, saxophones aren’t made specifically for one type of music or another. That is where mouthpieces, reeds, ligs, and most importantly the player come in.
If you’re not going to spend a decent amount of money and get a nice instrument, I’d recommend not spending at all- what you’ll get will be junk. I suspect a “low budget” is less than 2K, the price of a YTS 23. However, don’t get me wrong, the 23 series are nice horns.
If you really don’t have that much to spend, you may want to consider a reppad that could significantly increase the playing capabilities- the pads may have taken some damage over the years. Technicians should be able to find out how many leaks your horn has, and a re-pad could make a good difference. They are pretty pricy- they can run a couple hundred dollar- but it is certainly better than buying a junk saxophone.
Another thing to do would be to get a new mouthpiece. Morgan makes fine pieces, but if it’s not giving you the edge you need for jazz, a new MP is certainly something to look into. Look into Otto Links, Meyers, and Vandorens (V16 and JAVA mouthpieces). The right mouthpiece can make a huge difference.
