Yamaha Clarinet
What clarinet company do you reccomand…how much did it cost you and where did you get it?
I am going to buy a clarinet for school band program and the band teacher has reccomanded Yamaha YCL # and Signet 100…but the only prices under $400 are the very used ones! PS
Talking about bflat type clarinet: not the one that looks like a saxaphone…the normal one
Recommendations: Do not buy a metal one unless you live in a terrible climate.
Buy a model that has the lower keys attached to their levers, not just supported. This is worth the extra money.
Used ones work just fine. Especially if they have been repadded. If not check each pad for cuts. Actually put it together. Make sure the pieces fit firmly. And that it comes apart all right. Test each key to make sure the actions are smooth. One thing you get with the higher priced models is that the force required to press each key is the same.
Once in a while you run into a tuning problem with the cheaper models. It would be a good idea to make sure it tunes with a reasonable separation at the tuning connection (the short one).
Using these guidelines, a good strategy is to buy used and upgrade later.
There are other good brands. Later on you may know more about just exactly what you want.
