what brand of violin shoulder rest are good?
my shoulder rest is branded FOM. what is FOM? is it a good brand? o.O
My short answer is YES, FOM is a good brand.
I have two FOM shoulder rests and a Kun shoulder rest. One of the FOM models is based off of the standard Kun shape, and I prefer that one to the Kun. The padding is softer and more comfortable; in comparison, the Kun’s foam padding is rock-hard. In addition, the FOM rest has much larger feet and doesn’t fall off nearly as often, though I’ve yet to find a site that sells spare parts for FOM rests.
The other FOM shoulder rest I have is roughly based on the Wolf Forte Secundo, with a curved bar and telescopic legs. That’s where the similarity ends. The Secundo has only one with adjustment (the sliding curved wire) and it is tightened with a screwdriver. The FOM has a similar sliding wire for both of its feet, and they are locked and unlocked with small buckles/switches. My teacher has a Wolf Forte Secundo that I’ve tried, and I prefer the FOM.
