for Jazz, is a Tenor Sax better or an Alto Sax? what is a good quality interm afford sax, yamah,keilw,selmer?
around $1,000 for a good quality saxophone for Jazz… just learning but want a quality affordable one so I know I will enjoy the sound…..
They are both good. I don’t think there is any better or worse of the two. After all, take the two biggest saxophone performers (Charlie Parker and John Coltrane) and one plays alto (Parker) and one plays tenor (Coltrane). As to that you never hear the tenor, that person doesn’t know what they are talking about. There are tons of solos that are tenor and you have absolutely no problem hearing them. Any of the big name brand saxophone makers (Yamaha, Keilwerth, Selmer, Yanigasawa, Cannonball) are going to be good instruments. UNfortunately getting anything other than maybe a student level instrument for under $1000 is very difficult. There are other brands out there that also make quality student level instruments. If you want to learn the instrument, go to the music store and rent one until you know that you want to really commit to this instrument. Then a lot of the stores have rent-to-own options on their instruments.
