I play clarinet and would like some help.?

My mother just got me a new clarinet it’s still a student model, Gibson-Baldwin Epoch. I would like to know if this brand is any good? It’s way better than my 6 year old Selmer , but I’d like to know if it’s a good brand to be playing….as a high school student. I’m trying to save up for a professional model also. What brands are good? What mouthpieces would you recommend? I’ve been playing for 6 years. I’d also like to know what reeds you like… I prefer size 4 Mitchell Laurie reeds. Also what brand and style of ligatures are good. I’d really like to go and try different mouthpieces and clarinets and ligatures and such. I would really appreciate your help in this, I’m very serious about my playing and would like to have good instruments and parts to play on. Also what reeds to you recommend for Alto sax?
I’d like people to answer with more detail…so I really know what to look for.

I’m a double-reed player (I play the oboe) and I understand how important it is to have a good instrument and a good reed! It’s great that you’re trying lots of different models, because part of finding a good instrument is the one that’s right for you. I play the piano, too, and I know that I tend toward different instruments than some others prefer.

Listen to recordings of clarinetists, choose the ones that you like the sound (not necessarily the style of music, but the sound) and then research the type of clarinet that artists plays. That’ll give you a good place to start. You should also be studying with a good teacher. Is there a college or university near by where you could take lessons? If so, find a good teacher and ask them what instrument they recommend. Yout teacher might also put you in touch with someone selling a good second-hand instrument, so you could end up with a much higher calibre of instrument than you could otherwise afford.
