Want to be a pro sax player, Boulder or Berklee?
could I get the same education for tons less money at CU Boulder than I could at Berklee college of music? I know Berklee has a rep but is it all just hype?
Admittedly, I don’t know much about Boulder or their music program. But as a Berklee student, I can tell you that it is NOT all hype. As a music conservatory (and as the one contemporary music school in the country), the education is much more specialized. Instead of having the general education requirements that you’ll have at any large university, our core classes all revolve around music- Ear Training, Harmony, Arranging, private lessons, and playing ensembles are all required. Compared to a regular school, we take much fewer liberal arts classes and spend the vast majority of our time focused on all aspects of music, from technique and performance to theory and composition.
In addition to the difference in the classes you’ll be taking, the connections you’ll make at Berklee are unlike what you can find anywhere else. Whether you’re trying to form a group to play with, find someone who can help you get gigs, or get a recording together, you won’t have to search around very long to get what you’re looking for. When everyone around you, teachers and students alike, are top-level musicians and producers who gig constantly and have a lot of experience in your field, making the kind of connections that will continue to help you after you leave school is ridiculously easy.
There are plenty of other reasons, but to keep this post somewhat reasonable in length, I’ll just list one more- location. If you’re really serious about becoming a professional musician, establishing yourself early on in a place with a thriving music scene is key. Boulder may be a beautiful place, but it can’t possibly keep up with the many opportunities available to musicians in a much larger, musically-centered city like Boston.
