Sax Mouthpiece

How much does a Bari Sax mouthpiece go for?
I currently play alto sax but I want to pick up a bari sax mouthpiece to be able to play the bari sax at my school… I don’t want anything fancy, just a beginners.
How much are they? 20$? 40$?
Thanks
You can usually find beginner’s mouthpieces for between $40 and $60. It kind of depends on what materials you want… plastic is the cheapest, followed by rubber, then metal. I have a really generic mouthpiece (I can’t even find a brand on the thing! lol) that I got for about $50, but I also have a Selmer CStar that cost about $160, and I’ve seen Ottolinks for up to $500 (though you can find them for $250).
I would actually RECOMMEND getting a beginner mouthpiece to start off with, and TRY IT OUT FIRST. Bari mouthpieces can get extremely wide and open, and it takes a LOT of lung power to play them. Others are almost more closed than alto moutpieces, and you feel backed up trying to blow them.
Also, it depends on what sound you are looking for. For example, I hate using my CStar for jazz (it is mellow and centered), but I wouldn’t trade it for anything when playing classical (again, mellow and centered).
Mouthpiece makers have done some funny things with mouthpieces, trying to get different tones, etc… ESPECIALLY for sax! LOL So if you’re looking for a “jazz mouthpiece”, you should try it first, anyways… it may turn out to be a better mouthpiece for something else.
Make sure whatever you choose feels comfortable and you have good control over it. If you aren’t able to borrow the school’s bari to try it out on, see if your local music store will let you try the whole setup. They may be able to give you discounts, too.
If you really want to be brave, and are just willing to buy, try http://www.wwbw.com or http://www.musiciansfriend.com. They have a few cheaper mouthpieces… but they also have return policies.
Good luck, and hope this helped!
