Rico Baritone
If i was trying to get a more jazzy sound on my baritone sax, then i would lower my reed thickness,right?
I play the baritone sax for my schools marchong band, but i also would like to experiment with it more. Right now I have a great sound, i fill the entire horn with air but i would like to try and get a more jazzy sound. I use a 2 Rico right now, would dropping to a 1 1/2 help me in trying to get a more jazzy sound? Also, is there a better way to hold my embachure( i dont think i spelled that right) in order to achieve my goal? Thank You!
I’m not so sure about the reed thickness. Usually reed thickness has to do with the richness of the sound. I recommend maybe using a metal mouthpiece? They tend to have a brighter sound which would be good for jazz tunes. So basically the moral of this segment of my comment. . . No. Your reed strength doesn’t really have much to do with it.
I really recommend investing in a private teacher. Maybe find a local college and talk to their jazz professor.
The best you can do is practice (and I cannot stress this enough. . . PRIVATE LESSONS). My nickname was White Clay and Afro White for forever in my high schools jazz band because of a tragic accident that happened between me and my playing during a song called Red Clay and Afro Blue. So just work on it and you’ll be fine.
