what is the best alto saxophone to get keilwerth, rampone & cazzani, or Selmer?
That depends. If you’re looking for a student line horn go with a Yamaha YAS 23. If you’re looking for a professional model, there is no one best saxophone. Here is what I recommend: there is a store in South Bend, IN called the Woodwind and Brasswind. They have tons of instruments, and you can try them all. You need to call ahead and reserve instruments to try out, and you can normally try out about ten. Most professional Alto Saxes run around $3,500. You should try the following: 4 Selmer Paris Series III’s, 2 Yanikasawas in that same price range, 1 Yamaha Custom X, 1 Yamaha Custom Z, and a keilwerth. Those are all the big name horns, and are all very good. If you can’t make it to South Bend, you can have them ship you three saxes at a time to try them out. I have had my series three for a little while now, and I LOVE it. It is a very bright horn, and plays amazingly. I play with a Selmer C* mouth piece (which comes with any selmer paris sax). If you don’t get a selmer, buy one, because they are the best classical mouthpieces out there. For Jazz I would recommend a Meier Mouthpiece (be sure to try out several different kinds to find the one you like). If you are looking for an amazing jazz saxophone, try looking at a few Selmer Mark IV’s. They run anywhere from $3000 to $5000 and up.
