How many hours a day should I practice my flute?
Hi. I want to become a professional musician. I’m in my junior year of high school, I take 2 AP classes and 2 Honors classes. I’m also in marching band, I’m taking drivers ed and do stage crew for the fall play. I also take chorus and I’m in the orchestra. It’s a lot. But I want to know, if I’m going into college to become a professional musician, how many hours a day should I practice NOW in high school. Many people say how in college you practice all the time. Right now I’m practicing my flute and piccolo, a minimum of 2 hours a day (1 hour for both) should I do more? let me know your opinions 
So someone pointed out that I didn’t mention something. I do take private lessons except for the fact that right now I have a busy schedule and cannot afford them so I’m taking them again later in the year.
You listed MANY things that you are doing – but nowhere in that list did you say you were taking SERIOUS private instruction on the flute. The entire purpose of practice is to solidify the concepts and skills that you are taught – NOT to just do things over and over and over and hope that MAGIC happens, and that you improve. That way lies madness. I am a professional flutist, certified teacher, and competition adjudicator in NY, since 1971 (that was my first year of TEACHING – I have played the flute since 1963, and the piano since 1957). Without a FINE teacher, you WILL NOT – repeat WILL NOT – get into an decent college as a music major, with flute as your instrument. Whatever instruction you get from your school lessons is REALLY inadequate – this is what you need to play in their bad, but HARDLY what you need to be a flute major, even at a mediocre school.
I maintain a practice regimen, because of my professional playing, and so do my students. Yes, THEY are in a lot of things in school and the community as well – but if you want to succeed in something, you prioritize. It does NOT take umpteen hours a day – if your practice is pre-planned to focus on specific areas, under the guidance of a good teacher. By yourself, you can flail around for 8 hours a day, and get NOWHERE. Call the FINEST Teacher you can find today – or decide to major in something else. It does you no service for me to tell you to just find a smaller, less competitive college to attend – because when you get out, you will no be able to compete with other for a JOB – they will have degrees from TOP schools, because they were able to get INTO them from HS. If you are serious, you must ditch EVERYTHING in your life that eats time ( stage crew??? Please . . .) and devote yourself to the flute as if you were trying out for the Olympics. And – you should also be taking piano – ALL music colleges require you to reach a certain level, and you might as well get it over with now.
I wish you luck – but you have MASSIVE amounts of work to do before your dream can ever hope to come true. Call a REALLY FINE teacher today – one who has degrees in music/music education/flute and is a career working professional. Expect lesson to be expensive. Oh well. And then there is the matter of an appropriate instrument . . . a whole nuther topic. . .
