What’s the best Bb clarinet brand for an intermediate player?
Okay, so I’m going into high school next fall, and i need my own clarinet. I don’t want a plastic clarinet anymore, but I don’t want my mom to spend too much money on me. I Know I’m getting my reeds and mouthpiece from Vandoren (and Mitchell Lurie for reeds) and Rovner for ligatures, but I don’t know about the actual clarinet. Help?
As you’d need to upgrade your intermediate instrument in just a few years anyway, I say go straight to Buffet.
R-13s are good. All but a few clarinetists in the studio at my school play Greenlines. Greenline is something like 98% wood, with some element added that makes the instrument particularly resistant to cracking.
If you absoutely need to get an intermediate instrument for financial purposes, go with the Buffet E-11. It’s still wood, but not quite as exquisitely made as the others I mentioned. It’s about $500 through WoodwindBrasswind and most local music stores will match that price to get your business. If your music store won’t match the price, find one that will–you need a chance to play the instrument in the store, check out the ease of sound in all registers, articulation, dynamics, etc.
So to sum it up, Buffet is basically the only brand you want.
R-13 and Greenline are the pro models. E-11 is the intermediate. Good luck!
