Which reed is better for clarinet?
Mitchell Lurie or Rico Reserve
The other responder gave a good web site to learn about reeds types and strengths. Having studied with Mitchell Lurie, he told me that he makes Mitchell Lurie reeds to play right out of the box for students.
Rico Royals are similar to Mitchell Lurie so you are fine with either one.
Vandoren (there are several types, but the regular ‘Blue Box’ is what I use professionally) use generally a bit better cane than Lurie or Rico, which means that they may last longer. A reed will play for several hours, for several sessions. Best to rotate several at a time.
Good questions, and I wish you the best! Make sure to purchase a reed holder….best is the Vito Reed Holder, which is about $3. DON’T use the Reedguard if you can help it…the reeds dry funny and warp, making them unusable.
