Are Maxam Violins a waste of money?

I am just about to buy this violin for the sole reason that it is pretty damn cheap. But I do wonder if it will just be of an absolutely horrid quality. If anyone has had experience with this brand, please offer your opinion.
A few thing struck me immediately while looking at the ad.
1. The case looks to be the best part of the deal. A good looking suspension case. Though it may be horrid.
2. The bridge on the instrument it at the very top of the F holes, near the end of the fingerboard. Obviously the instrument is not properly set up, and will arrive at your home not properly set up.
3. Next time I get some expendable overtime pay, I may actually go out and get a couple of the low-ball instruments to knock around a bit and decide first-hand if there is ANY real value to them. I don’t play violin, but I’ve often been tempted to pick up a $60 flute just to compare to my ever-so-mundane student quality Selmer.
… I would be more tempted by a ‘cello or upright bass. (Something I’d consider playing.)
