Mandolin Pickup
Is it easy to learn the mandolin or guitar?
Is the guitar or mandolin easier to learn. Should you get a 4 or 8 string mandolin. I saw one in a shop a used shop 8 string mandolin with electric pickups for less then 100.
anyway I played brass several years ago but never tried strings. Thanks for the help
Both instruments can be learn with steady practice with the aid of good instructional material.
If can can read the musical staff your progress will be quicker in both instruments.
The “standard” mandolin have four “sets” or “courses” of strings. Each set/course consists of two strings. The tuning for each
set is the same (two strings-same tune).
It is tuned (from high to low) EADG just like
the violin – but the violin only have single (no sets/courses) strings.
There is the Octave Mandolin (Mandola in Europe) which is tuned exactly one octave BELOW the violin or mandolin.
Their scale length is nearly equivalent in scale length to guitars capoed at 2nd fret.
Guitars (six strings) are tuned EBGDAE -from high to low- Notice that the sequence is “backwards” to the tuning of the mandolin.
Guitar 1st 4strings : EBGD (No A).
Mandolin four sets : EADG (No B).
If you know (or learn the fret board)for the
open E,A,D,G,on the guitar you should be able to learn the mandolin rather quickly.
The entire fret-board is much shorter and much easier to “fret” by small hands players.
Friend that are proficient at both instruments
tell me that the mandolin is easier to learn.
