other than bingo or christmas caroling — and not things to brings, activites!

do interviews with the people there about their lives, bring tape recorders or video cameras and then ask them questions like, “what was your favorite toy as a child?”, “how did you meet your spouse?”, or ” what was your favorite vacation?”. each person pick a resident and do your interview, then make a small book if you used a tape recorder, or make a video if you used video. then go back to the home and view it with the residents. a lot of those people have had some interesting things happen in their lives. stay away from asking about big news stories like “where were you when kennedy was shot?”, and stick with more personal anecdotes, it’s more interesting and less general.
you could also see if they would be willing to do some scrapbooking with you, but supplies for that can get expensive. someone could bring a scanner/copier from their house, and you could get the residents to scan in their pictures and make copies. then you help them put together a scrapbook, maybe help them by writing out a story on what is happening in each picture, and decorate the pages together. don’t forget to have some pictures taken of you guys with them to add to the scrapbooks later. you might even be able to get some businesses to donate supplies for this project.
really, all they want is someone to visit them, to care about them, to listen and be interested when they talk.
