how to play jazz swing music?
I just started a jazz camp and realized, I had no clue how to do swing! The teacher would say okay, play this is swing, and I would have no clue what to do! So, how do you play swing music? And by the way, I play Bb clarinet.
Swing is not something that is easily defined in a few sentences. To really learn how to swing you have to listen to jazz to pick up the feel of the eighth notes. In swinging rhythms, we play the eighth notes on the beat slightly longer than eighth notes off the beat. At faster tempos, the eighth notes become more and more even. You have to listen a lot to pick up the subtleties of swing rhythms. An important part of swing is also in the articulation. Keep your eighth notes legato. Also, we usually play quarter notes short and marcato. We do not play swing eighth notes like dotted eighth – sixteenths. That approach produces a very rigid rhythmic feel, and does not swing. Also, the triplet pattern only works for a narrow tempo range.
