Mix Some Jazz And Classical With Metal
Progressive metal or sometimes known as prog metal is another subgenre of the heavy metal community. Progressive metal has features from rock, jazz, classical and metal. They the different elements combine into one genre of metal music. Prog metal bands usually have some type of jazz or classical inspiration. These genres of music were known as the backbones of progressive metal. Progressive metal less popular than the others in the metal community. But with more bands creating more progressive style of music, this could push it into mainstream.
1960 & 1970 – The Start of Progressive Metal
Back in the 1960’s and 70’s in the beginning of Progressive metal. A band named High Tide started to uses some elements from these other genres of music in their metal music. Other bands started to follow the trend. King Crimson and Rush was another band to take some of the features of other music genres and mix them. There was a start for progressive metal, but it needed someone to push it to the next level. There were three bands that could do that. Queensryche, Fates Warning and Dream Theater all had their own ideas and inspiration for progressive metal With having some inspiration of rock, jazz and classical music, this gave these three bands more edge and influence of a metal sound.
The Breakout
Progressive metal started to become more popular in the metal community in the 1990’s. When there was a release from Queensryche called Silent Lucidity that became very popular on MTV and on the radio. Other progressive bands started to come out and became more mainstream after this explosion of popularity. With the road paved now bands like Tool, Symphony X, Opeth, Threshold, Pain of Salvation and Ayreon now were getting more publicity. All these bands had their own unique style that made them a new popular progressive metal band.
Time Moves On
As time went on so did progressive metal. Conscience, Dark Suns and Disillusion started to become the new comers of progressive metal and were greatly influenced by the “fathers” of progressive metal. Most progressive metal bands have always looked up to Opeth, Tool, Pain of Salvation, Anathema and Green Carnation.
Progressive Mixed with Classical, Jazz, Rock and Metal
With some heavy metal, elements of rock, jazz and classical music will give you the building block of progressive metal. Progressive metal could be a parent to other metal genres. The most popular bands in progressive metal are Opeth and King’s X. These two bands could even be considered to be progressive death metal bands. Devin Townsend, Symphony X and Shadown Gallery are some bands that can fit in traditional progressive metal. Also watch for bands like Meshuggah, Between the Buried and Me and Pestilence which are considered to be jazz / fusion death metal.
What’s Next for Progressive Metal?
With these new bands coming into progressive metal the structure and style of the music has evolved to more shred guitars and complex music. The experimentation of this genre has been influenced by thrash, classical, jazz and even its own music and will continue to change. As the song structures become more advanced and complex, so will the riffs, beasts and talent. There is a strong future for progressive metal.
