Is a tile back splash applied over regular Sheetrock ok?
It will be in a kitchen and the backsplash is basically for looks, it will not come into contact with water as the countertop is a moulded one piece construction with about a 3 inch flange going up behind the surface. Any application tips? The sheetrock has not been painted of primed yet. Any tips on products to use?
Yes, it will be fine in most cases. Best is to prime it and paint it so moisture can not get in there. Use eggshell or higher sheen to make it more water resistant. Use mastik to glue the backslash and caulk all around it with some waterproof caulk (either bathroom calk or clear silicone). I did that in my house and I see no signs of trouble after years of use.
