What is the difference between using a guitar pick and your fingers as a pick?
I can’t seem to get my chords to ring well using finger picking although each string rings right by itself. I am wondering if this problem might be solved if I used a guitar pick. Also perhaps it could be a problem with my guitar or strings (its an old guitar)?
It’s a while since I’ve played the guitar, but my recollection is if your fingers are placed correctly then it won’t make any difference whether you play with a pick or with your fingers. That said, some chords are difficult. I know that since my fingers are a bit large I would use two fingers to form an A rather than the recommended three. The point being that it is the notes being played that are important, not which fingers you use.
Another point is there is more than one way to play a chord, so if one chord pattern doesn’t work, try another pattern for the same chord.
Lastly, you may need to check the height of the strings above the fretboard. It may be they are hitting the fretboard when you pick them. This won’t be obvious if the string is played “open”, but will be more obvious when you strum.
