Geared Tuners
Are 5th string tuners changeable?
I purchased an old “Kent” open back for the sole use to take to work as a practice banjo. The old inexpensive open gear type tuners on the head operate fine, but the 5th string tuner is a friction type and it will not hold tune. It backs off on its own. Is there any way to tighten these old friction type tuners up, or replace them?

You should be able to tighten the tension screw if it’s not worn out.
If you need to replace it they are not very expensive and can be purchased online.
