Fiddle Bow
Is it possible to produce music by playing the classical guitar with a violin bow?
I’m just really curious. Or is the bow itself made only for use with fiddles?
regular violin bow works. I’ve used them on my electrics before. because the bridge saddle curvature is minimal on a guitar compared to a violin, you’re going to be sounding all the strings at once.
however, jimmy page used to bow his les paul – listen to dazed and confused on the first led zep disk or (better) the live version of it on “the song remains the same”. also alex lifeson or rush used a bow on his gibson double neck back in the 70’s – check out the cd “all the worlds a stage” – the song bytor and the snow dog has a break with some kick *ss bowing.
the trick to bowing a standard guitar is using your fretting hand to mute any the strings that you don’t want to produce sound. it’s do-able… when you get into two handed tapping (jennifer batton, stanley jordan, etc) you also need to mute with your fret hand. you can study their technique for ideas.
