Fiberglass Cello
How do you stop a Cello bow from squealing on the A and D strings?
My cello bow is in the shop being rehaired and the replacement courtesy bow Is new. But fiberglass. I rosined it diligently it squeals on the top two strings. The cello has never done that before. Too much or too little rosin? Help?
1) Try using less pressure.
2) may need to tighten you bow strings a little more.
3) try putting more rosin on. You know you have enough on if you graze your fingernail over the top and it comes off white. Don’t use your finger it will get oil on it.
4) Make sure you wrist is in the correct position. Break your wrist on the end of up bow so you don’t have to hurt your arm and elbow while doing this.
5) The way the strings make sound is that there are little microscopic hairs on each of the horse hairs on your bow. they are all pointing in the same direction on a single hair. but the direction alternates from one hair to the next. That is why the sound comes out in up bow and down bow. You don’t want to tilt your bow at a severe angle. Because the hairs will not hit the string directly on. and it will make the screeching noise. This is probably the main problem if you are squeaking consistently. Make sure to keep your bow straight on the bowstrings and have as many hairs touching the strings as possible. This makes for a bigger fuller sound.
