midi piano keyboard question?

I have the kurzweil sp2x keyboard and im trying to get it all set up for midi recording. I am starting off simple with the red dot forever program to record and anvil studio to edit. My problem is, I am running vista on this computer, and so apparently, I dont need to install the driver for my keyboard. I am thinking about just going back to xp and installing the driver so it will work, but my computer wont recognize the keyboard. If anybody knows what the problem is PLEASE HELP. thanks.
it goes directly from usb, it has a port on the back that says usb, so if thats what you mean…
When i plugged it in the first time, it recognized it and said it installed drivers, but when i go into the options on the programs i have to find it, it does not recognize it anywhere. I think i might just put xp back on my computer.
it installs something but i cant find anything anywhere that shows any kind of driver that was installed.

Edit: Have you tried the most basic trouble-shooting problem and replaced the USB cable with a new/known good cable. (level 1 hardware) An intermittent or faulty cable will cause no end to your frustration. Also verify that the Kurzweil and the PC are both USB 2.0 spec, or at minimum the PC is (I cannot imagine that a Vista computer is 1.0 or 1.1) If you are running 2.0, the cable must be 2.0 compliant as well to deal with the data transfer speed.

Ok, Kurzweil says you don’t need drivers (verified at http://www.kurzweilmusicsystems.com/Product.php?product=50&tab=downloads ) but it’s not showing up in your list of drivers?

1. Kurzweil is notorious for putting hardware switches and soft switches in/on their equipment. Verify that there isn’t a switch to select between using the MIDI ports .or. the USB port.
1.a. Make sure that the Kurzweil is transmitting MIDI, I’m not sure it’s on by default. Go through whatever menus to transmit, and set it to OMNI-On (transmit on all 16 channels) for testing purposes, you can refine that after it’s all working.

2. If that’s not the problem, let’s address Vista

• Right click on your computer icon,
• Select “Manage”
• Agree to the annoy, uh “user account control” dialog box
• Click Device Manager

Either something is going to show up with a red X or
Check “Sound, video and game controllers” by clicking on the plus sign. Your keyboard should show up in there.
If it’s not there (or if it was the red X item) delete it.

• Right click on “Owner-PC” (or whatever your computer is called) at the top of the list and select “Scan for hardware changes”

… like all things Microsoft, it won’t be under the Universal Serial Bus controllers where you’d expect to find USB devices.

3. Fire up Red Dot Forever
Select options
Under MIDI input select (whatever Kurzweil loaded) as the MIDI input stream.

… hummm, doesn’t seem to record for me either. (using a Yamaha P-200 going through a M•Audio MIDISport 2X2
So RDF could be the culprit.

4. Get MIDI OX ( http://www.midiox.com/ ) which will display your midi stream visually. A very useful tool for troubleshooting. (Like, by verifying that my piano is on the 2X2’s B in port, and I am transmitting on channel 1 I can now record with RDF.)

I think tech support at Kurzweil would be a better option than reverting back to XP.
