What do these terms for how a drum set or drum head sounds mean?
I’m lookin to buy new drum heads but I dont really know what all the lingo means when websites explain how a head sounds. Id like to know what a drum’s “attack” is, a drums “sustain” and what “overtones” are, and what an “open” sound is or if there is a contrary to it, maybe a “closed” sound. If you dont know all of them, any explanation will help.
Attack is just a word for how sharp, steep, piercing, etc the sound from hitting the drum is.
Sustain is how long a sound lasts after you hit it. I perfer it to be short.
Overtones are the annoying echo you may get. Other times it can be nice sounding too, but I get more annoying ones then nice ones.
Open and closed are really more up to the drummer then the head. If you have your hand on a drum and strike it, thats closed. If you leave your other stick pressed on the drum and then hit it then its also closed. if you hit the drum and keep your stick there its closed. But if you quickly release, its open.
Really when I look to buy heads, I skip the people that use that lingo, I wanna know if I can get a good bounce and a crisp sound at a good price, durable quality and the right size.
