cello bridge placement?
i know i sound clueless but i was in the prossess of replacing all my strings on my cello and when putting my bridge back in place does the side that curves at the top face the tail piece and fine tuners or the finger board and bridge?
kay, so firstly, if you’ll notice, your bridge is NOT symmetrical. this is because when you reach over with your bow, it’s easier to catch the low strings. So if you look carefully, place the side the slants higher on the side with your C and G string. The side that slants steeper and lower, place it on the side of your D and A string.
If your cello is relatively old, then you should have already have marks of where your bridge used to be. Typically, its placed between the notches on your F-holes. If you look carefully, you’ll realize the cross of the F is slightly crooked, so you have to place it in the middle. But don’t forget that there is probably already a mark there.
Make sure when you put it up, it’s perpendicular to your instrument. What I mean by this is make sure the bridge is up straight, not tilting forward or back. This will affect the tone of your playing otherwise.
Finally, the bridge is really stubborn! Make sure once you place it, you have a friend or family member hold it FIRMLY in place while you tighten your strings with the pegs. Otherwise, your bridge will fall down again! And be sure that you push inwards while tightening your pegs- otherwise it won’t hold and will just fall loose again.
