Cello beginner with bow?
Okay, so I just got this new cello and it is beautiful! I am a beginner and I have never played before. My bow is also new, of course. Every time I bow on my cello I don’t get much of a sound. I get the faintest bit, but it is barely there. I saw this beginners cello video and it said to tighten the bow hairs with the screw, I did that and it didn’t work. I’m not sure if they are too tight, or too loose. I don’t want to break my bow hairs by making it too tight. HELP!
I hope you put SOME rosin on the bow (that’s the little round tablet of brown sticky stuff you have to rub over the whole length of the hairs – it’s this that grips the strings and causes them to vibrate). I suppose if no-one told you to do that, how would you know?
New bows always take a while to collect enough rosin to make the string ’speak’ properly. Keep adding rosin until it seems OK and then just add rosin before each time you play.
