Brass Whistle
My dad bought this weird oriental set at a yard sale and we can’t even figure out what it is….any ideas??

Its got a little pot thing with a brass tube sticking out, with a notch like would be in a whistle sorta… and its like ceramic/brass..
Although it is difficult to see with the small photograph it looks like it might be the case for a Chinese calligraphy or painting set. The small pot may be an inkwell and the small ceramic dishes for mixing colour. Alternatively it might be part of a tea service, but this is unlikely.
To Rockchick: It may very well be cloisonne, but this was imported into China from the Byzantine Empire and then from China to Japan, It is difficult to tell from the stylistic elements what it’s exact origins are.
To MichaelMN: Interesting thought, but it looks a bit impractical for a bento box, not really designed to be carried very far, the lids look to only rest on the top of the box and the pot and dishes would fall out if tipped.
