Traveling drummer… What’s the best style drum?
Me and a friend of mine that plays acoustic guitar are going to become travelers of sorts and I need to get a hand drum that is easily moved, the best would be able to be strapped to my back. I would want something bigger than bongos also. I thought about a djembe but I’m not sure how handy that’d be… any suggestions?
I think a djembe would be the best choice. I play a djembe once in a while (I’m a kit drummer), and it is possible to get a good range of sounds from the single drum.
You can get a deep bass sound from the center of the head, a mid tone when played between the center and edge, and a high pitched slap on the edge. It is a versatile drum and would come in very handy.
If you will be walking with the drum a lot, make sure not to get a huge djembe. The one I play is a 18 inch Remo and I would not want to carry that around for very long.
